What problems can couple therapy help with?

People come to couples therapy for many different reasons including , feeling distant with each other, not being able to communicate effectively, sexual /intimacy issues, constant bickering/arguments, affairs, impact of depression/anxiety/ bereavement/redundancy/retirement/illness,  blended family issues, control and responsibility issues.

What's the aim of couple therapy?

The overall aim of couple therapy is to get back to something good that has been lost, to help you both to support each other through a difficult time, or to part amicably. In order for couple therapy to be effective both parties have to be committed to making a difference, it's no good one person feeling they are being dragged there and being ambivalent to the work. This is an investment in your future together, to help you both work together as a couple so that you can support each other and have a more fulfilling future together.

What kinds of couples do you work with?

I have experience of working with many different types of couples, including heterosexual, bi-sexual, lesbian, gay, trans , gender fluid and those in exclusive, open or polyamorous relationships. I see my client as being the relationship between you both. I prefer not to work with couples where there is violence or addiction in the relationship and would recommend that individual therapy is sought for these issues before embarking upon couples therapy.

What happens in a couple therapy session?

We will look at the problems you are having and unpack them in a safe, supportive way. I will help you both to explore and explain issues. We will do some practical exercises in the therapy room (nothing sexual) and there will be homework for you to do together and separately at home. Typically couple therapy is not a quick fix and I would usually expect to see couples for at least 6 sessions.
